Waardenburg Syndrome
WHAT IS WAARDENBURG SYNDROME?
Waardenburg Syndrome (WS) is a rare condition whose main characteristics are deafness and pigment abnormalities. There are four different types of WS.
The symptoms of WS include:
- Deafness
- White patches on the skin
- White patches of hair
- Early greying of the hair
- Constipation
- Pale blue eyes or eyes that are different colours
- Occasionally slight intellectual difficulties
- Maybe problems straightening joints
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF WS?
WS is a genetic condition.
WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVAILABLE?
Although there is no cure for WS the symptoms of the condition can be treated individually. For example, if the individual with WS is deaf then hearing aids and lessons in lip reading and sign language will be provided. Medication and special diets are provided for those with constipation.
