WHAT IS MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY?
Muscular Dystrophy (MD) is a genetic condition which affects the contraction of the muscles. There are a variety of different forms of MD which differ in their severity.
There are over 100 different forms of MD. Amongst the most common forms of MD are:
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy
- Becker muscular dystrophy
- Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy
- Myotonic dystrophy
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY?
MD can be progressive. The symptoms of MD may include:
- Problems walking
- Difficulty in swallowing
- Falling over
- Clumsiness
- Problems with breathing
- Difficulty standing
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF MD?
MD is a genetic condition.
HOW IS MD TREATED?
Although there is no cure at present, scientists are currently researching whether gene therapy may work. There are however treatment strategies for people with MD which include:
- Exercise – particularly of the affected muscles
- Physiotherapy
- Surgery - to correct posture
- Pacemaker - for those whose condition affects the heart
- Aids such as wheelchairs and leg braces
