Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
WHAT IS EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROME?
Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) affects the joints and skin. People with EDS can often hyperextend joints. Symptoms include:
- Skin conditions: The skin is capable of greater extension than is typical, there is easy splitting of the skin, there may be lumps and folds of skin over joints.
- Joints are capable of a greater range of movement than typical.
- Individuals with EDS bruise easily.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF EDS?
Gene mutations lead to collagen defects which weakens tissue in the joints. Collagen is a major protein in the body which lends strength and support to parts of the body including cartilage and ligaments.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO TREAT EDS?
Although there is no cure for EDS precautions can be taken to protect individuals with the condition. For example, padding around the joints of children, or bracing limbs. When taking precautions there should be a balance between protection and over-protection. When considering surgery it is important to remember that individuals with EDS may need longer for their bodies to heal. Recommended treatments include Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy.
